PEAR TREE LOG

pear tree log: I started this blog to keep my younger son, Jonny, in touch with life in Lincolnshire, while he spent a year working in China. That year turned into five! Now he is home and training to become a physics teacher. This is simply a patchwork quilt of some of the things I enjoy - life in rural Lincolnshire, our animals, friends, architecture, books, the gardens, and things of passing interest.

This poem relates to St Michael's Church, Burwell.  It has rabbits burrowing around and under it, through the graveyard.

  1. Dearest Elaine....After reading the poem, I'm not sure how to react to it. I think it makes me uneasy. What do you think?

  2. Dear Meggie, I know what you mean - and it is the main reason I didn't put it on the page of the post. The poem was commissioned recently as part of a heritage and arts scheme. The truth is that the church grounds are riddled with rabbit holes, up and down the hill, and also into the small grassy pathway which leads to the church. I'm afraid that from time to time they do unearth things which they shouldn't. (It also happens at the Calceby site which I posted about) I imagine they are also doing some harm to the foundations of the church and tower and as it is perched up on a hill I think the poet's imagination took wings...

There was nothing in the churchyard that shouldn't have been there, other than weeds, nettles, brambles and lots of rabbit holes!

The poet also wrote one, as part of the project, about All Saints Church in Saltfleetby. I'll post that later - I found it fascinating, especially given what I feel about that particular church.

  3. I think it's wonderful how poetry speaks so personally to our hearts..."and the strength of these stones" definitely stands out for me.
Would love to read the other one you mention by the same poet.
    Loved visiting.
    XOXO's,
    Marcia
